GTO Tasks in SSB: Complete Guide to Crack the Outdoor Ground Tasks
Aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces through the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a dream for thousands of defence aspirants every year. Among the three main testing techniques – Psychological Tests, Interview, and GTO (Group Testing Officer) series – the GTO Tasks in SSB are considered the most dynamic, challenging, and exciting part of the 5-day process. These tasks test your real-time leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, and presence of mind under pressure.
If you are preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, or SSB interviews, understanding GTO Tasks in SSB in depth can give you a decisive edge over other candidates.
What Are GTO Tasks in SSB?
The GTO series is conducted on Day 3 and Day 4 of the SSB interview and consists of 9 different tasks. These tasks are designed to assess the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) in a group setting as well as individually. The GTO observes how you perform when you are part of a team, how you contribute ideas, help others, take initiative, and stay calm under physical and mental stress.
List of 9 GTO Tasks in SSB

Each of these GTO Tasks in SSB evaluates different aspects of your personality and leadership potential.
Detailed Breakdown of Important GTO Tasks in SSB
1. Group Discussion (GD)
Two rounds of informal discussions on current affairs and social issues. Key Tips: Speak 3–4 times with logic and facts, listen to others, don’t interrupt, and support good points made by others.
2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
You are given a set of 3–5 problems on a map and model. You have to prioritize and write an individual solution, then discuss and arrive at a common group plan. Pro Tip: Time management and realistic solutions matter more than heroics.
3. Progressive Group Task (PGT)
The most loved and toughest outdoor task. 4 progressive obstacles with increasing difficulty. You have to cross them using helping materials (plank, rope, balli) while following strict rules. Golden Rules for PGT:
- Never violate rules (red paint, out of bound areas)
- Use ideas of every group member
- Keep motivating slower members
- Take initiative but don’t dominate
4. Half Group Task (HGT)
Similar to PGT but your group is divided into two. Only one obstacle. This is your chance to show more dominance and leadership since the group is smaller.
5. Individual Obstacles (IO)
10 obstacles to be completed in 3 minutes. Tests physical fitness, courage, and stamina. Common Obstacles: High jump, tiger leap, double platform jump, Burma bridge, tarzan swing, commando walk, etc. Tip: Attempt all 10 even if time is less — repetition gives more points.
6. Command Task (CT)
You are made commander and can choose 2 subordinates from your group. You have to cross one obstacle with limited resources. This is your personal interview with the GTO. Show decisiveness, clear communication, and effective utilization of your team.
7. Snake Race / Group Obstacle Race
A high-energy group race carrying a snake-like rope while crossing 6–7 obstacles. Tests team spirit, aggression, and physical endurance. War Cry Matters! Keep shouting your group war cry throughout.
8. Lecturette
Each candidate gets 3 topics and has to speak for 3 minutes on one. Tests confidence, knowledge, and communication skills.
9. Final Group Task (FGT)
Last outdoor task — one single obstacle similar to HGT. By now, the GTO has almost made up his mind, so give your 200%.
